How to Stay Organized as a Small Business Owner: 3 Tips for Success‍

Being an entrepreneur is all about taking charge of your own future which means that you are the captain of your ship. However, that is just the tip of the iceberg. In reality, you are also the chief officer, second mate, third mate, cabin boy, chef, and the janitor. That’s right – as the business owner, you have to clean up after yourself or things will quickly get messy! Thus, staying organized as a small business owner is essential for keeping things smooth and avoiding any unexpected hiccups along the way.

Below, we are sharing 3 tips that can help you do so.

Create a functioning organizational structure and hold yourself accountable

The first step to staying organized as a small business owner is to create a functioning organizational structure. This will help you stay on top of things so you never miss a beat in your daily schedule.

This can be as simple as using a printed calendar to keep track of both business and personal:

  • Dates
  • Deadlines
  • appointments

If you’re not a paper and pen person, there are plenty of digital calendars that you can use. If you want to take your organizational skills to the next level, you can use a project management software such as Trello, Asana, or Basecamp. These tools are great for organizing large projects, wrangling a team, and keeping track of due dates and milestones.

Pro tip: There are many more project management software systems in addition to the three we listed above. These just happen to be our favorites.

Hold yourself accountable

You can’t expect to stay organized if you don’t hold yourself accountable. (This is why having a business coach is so important.) Both your personal and professional goals must be written down. Doing so will allow you to track of your goals, project, deadlines, and progress.

Use reliable cloud storage

Oftentimes, entrepreneurs overlook the importance of proper storage and let’s face it, the world has come a long way since floppy discs! No matter what type of business you have, you are going to have documents to keep track of your operations. The thing is, you have to be careful about maintaining your security so that your files are not comprised.

There are many cloud storage services you can choose from, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, and more. Keep in mind that not all cloud storage services are 100% secure, so you’ll want to do a bit of research to find one that fits your needs. You can also use a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt and protect your data. A VPN will help you stay safe while you’re online and prevent your data from being stolen.

Create a network of peers

If you’re having trouble staying organized as a small business owner, you might benefit from talking to others who have been in your shoes before. If you don’t have anyone in your personal life who understands the challenges of running a business, find online communities and forums where you can get advice from other entrepreneurs and business owners. There are plenty of online communities and forums that you can join, such as Entrepreneur.com, Reddit.com/r/Entrepreneur, and Biz Ownership.

Final Thoughts

Staying organized as a small business owner can be difficult, but it is absolutely essential for success. With the tips outlined in this article, you should be well on your way to staying on top of your daily schedule and keeping your business running smoothly. Do not be afraid of reaching out for help. You are not alone – many other small business owners go through the same and/or similar struggles!
